Wreck This Journal: The Beginning

Wreck This Journal: The Beginning

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m just a bit of a perfectionist. Just a bit. Unfortunately that lovely personality trait of mine is a hindrance when it comes to art.

In high school, I was the half smart kid, half art kid. I was the girl that always had her nose in a book, and I was the girl that always walked around school with dry clay all over her jeans because she had too much fun in ceramics class and didn’t care about washing it off.

Whenever I sculpt or paint or draw, it starts off relaxing, but then I stress out. Why do I stress out? Because nothing ever looks the way I want it to. I’m good at art. I’m just not great at art. And so every mistake I made would bother me to no end. Once I graduated from high school, art wasn’t a constant in my life anymore. I just sort of… stopped.

But not anymore! Overdramatic story time is over, and I’m getting back into art. Yeah, I’m just good at it, but it’s still something that I love. As a way of moving forward from my need for perfection, I bought a Wreck This Journal. Yes, I am aware I am years late getting on the bandwagon, but at least I’m here!

For those of you who have never heard of Wreck This Journal, it’s basically an exercise in chaos. The point of the journal is to wreck the journal. Every mistake is a great mistake. Each page has instructions that you use as guidelines to follow, and they’re open to interpretation. I’m taking more of an artistic approach, so the journal probably won’t end up completely wrecked. Just wrecked enough.

Title Page

I’ve only completed a few pages of the journal because January has been hectic, but I think it’s looking pretty colorful so far. I found this amazing pink glitter ink marker at Michaels, so naturally I had to use it on the very first page because glitter is life. Unfortunately the sun refused to shine when I took these photos, but trust me, it’s very glittery.

This Book Belongs To

I also used the pink marker (you can never have too much glitter) as well as other markers on the second page, titled “This Book Belongs To:”. The task: to write my name, phone number, and address 6 different ways. This was the moment I realized this journal was definitely going to be a challenge because I made a mistake right in the beginning. Apparently I don’t know how to write my first name in cursive because there is an extra long squiggle right after the first letter. It really annoyed me, but I took a deep breath and moved on. Three cheers for personal growth! And there’s no photo for this page because I don’t think you need to know my phone number or my address…

Instructions

Then came the glitter page. As I’m sure you’ve figured out, I believe everything is better with glitter. (That’s my life motto, fyi.) It was a bit of a trial and error to figure out how to cover this page with blue holo glitter since I didn’t want it to be falling off the page. I ended up mixing the glitter with a bottle of mod podge I had stuffed at the bottom of my craft box and painted the page. It took quite a few layers to get a mostly opaque finish. Needless to say, it’s my favorite so far. But again, the glitter would be so much more captivating if the sun had actually cooperated.

Polka Dot Party

The next page I completed is smack dab in the middle of the journal. Who needs to go in order? Not this perfectionist.

The instructions: “Drip something here. (Ink, Paint, Tea) Close the book to make a print.” So I dripped dots of pink, purple, and blue paint and pressed the book together. Then I had the random idea to paint the background of one side black. Naturally I was annoyed that I didn’t think of this before I dripped the paint, but I got over it and adapted my idea to fit what I currently had. I finished it off by gluing “polka dot party” chain letter style, and voila!

Fun story: I was so exhausted when I did this page that I used the glue stick as chapstick. Oops.

Stay Tuned for More Updates!

I’m hoping to keep you updated on my Wreck This Journal progress as I work through these pages and hopefully inspire you to get one as well. Also, I’m still figuring this blog out and deciding what I would like to routinely post about. I have an interest in so many things that it’s hard to narrow it down. So don’t be surprised if a few things start changing around here soon.

Until next time! 🙂
